Kilauea Volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii oozed tons of lava daily for years. It covered roads, burned homes, and remade acres of land. Yet, on top of this unlikely Candyland, lava crickets flock to mate and gorge on plant debris and sea foam. ‘ūhini nēnē pele in Hawaiian and Caconemobius fori in scientificese, these insencts mysteriously disappear by the time plants begin growing.
What a marvelous world we inhabit with life flourishing in every nook and cranny.
