Recently I subscribed to Education Week and received a welcome email informing me that I could choose a pseudonym to comment on articles anonymously. Maybe this is common practice for internet newsletters subscribers but it seems wrong for an education news site to offer masks to its members. Why should I hide my identity to comment? Are people ashamed of their comments on education? Scared to be found out? Union teachers cannot be fired, why the fear? Am I naive in thinking that educators and education supporters should be able to talk to each other without malice or fear?
What has become of us and where are we headed if people need to hide in the shadows to speak not-freely?
